Racquel Williams
for Democratic
State Committee on
June 25, 2024

Racquel Williams was raised in Canarsie by a hardworking Trinidadian-American family who established roots in the NYC Department of Education and Department of Finance. She was educated in the Brooklyn public school system, and like fellow Brooklynites, Racquel always took pride in this diverse borough.

She was inspired to become an attorney when she learned about voter suppression at Hofstra University. This led her to:

  • interning Sen. Richard Durbin’s office in Washington, D.C.

  • earning a Bachelors of Art in Speech Communications, Concentration in Citizenship & Public Advocacy, with minors in Political Science and Journalism

  • graduating from St. John’s University School of Law

  • completing the National Democratic Training Committee program, and

  • volunteering for voter registration drives and Get Out the Vote campaigns.

Racquel's passion for her community led her to advocate for children in child protective proceedings in Family court as part of the Child Advocacy Clinic. As Guardian Ad Litem, she also advocated for age-related, physically, and/or mentally impaired tenants in eviction actions in Housing Court and NYCHA Administrative Hearings. She helped those tenants by coordinating with agencies and organizations for assistance.

After 8 years of practicing insurance law, Racquel is running for Democratic State Committee (District Leader) to continue advocating on her community’s behalf and to help reform the local Party. Racquel hopes to bring her unique perspective to the local Party. She also intends to put Brooklynites at the forefront of policies moving forward. Racquel will help to build a more responsive, organized, and inclusive Party to address issues such as gun violence, home and small business ownership challenges, and promote the positive programs such as youth activities to set the next generation up for success.

Her goal is to engage voters by educating them about the local Party and how the overall political process impacts our community. For example, one of the responsibilities of a State Committee member (District Leader) is to nominate judges. She will work to create a judicial forum that allows voters to meet the judicial nominees who will ultimately preside over housing, civil and felony cases that affect the community.
